It’s people like this going to Yale that are the reason why I would have never gotten in (had I applied). Nine seniors in Yale’s mechanical engineering program wanted to prove that you could make a human-powered spokeless bike. Well, they did it, and the result is pretty cool.
Due to time constraints, only the back wheel is spokeless, but the concept seems simple enough that the front wheel could easily be made spokeless as well. The student that posted this on reddit had the following to say:
First, it looks cool. Second, we only had a semester so we wanted to pick something that was both feasible and challenging. Also, you can do a lot of things with the space that opens up where the spokes use to be. You can stick an electric motor in there. You can install some sort of gyro balanced storage basket. Finally, the fact that we couldn’t find pictures of a real spokeless bicycle online really sealed the deal.
All this in one semester. Very impressive, my friends. Way to make us all look like failures.
