Today, Apple sold its 10 billionth iTunes song, a milestone that awards a $10,000 iTunes gift card and a whole bunch of Apple products to the winner.

Apple’s iTunes has been a monumental success. In the past two years, the online store has sold over 5 billion songs, whereas the previous 5 billion downloads took over half a decade to reach. Since iTunes is responsible for over 2/3rds of all digital music downloads, the future of this enterprise is in Apple’s hands. I hope that the company begins offering high-definition digital music at premium prices. Personally, I would pay a fortune for uncompressed (TRUE) 24-bit songs from my favorite musicians, and all audiophiles would too.
