Under a month before Apple’s iPad launch, major publisher Penguin Books has demonstrated some of the interactive ebooks that are lined up for the iBook Store. The video shows that embedded audio and video will be significant features of the newer ebook mediums going forward.
Currently, the universal .epub format is limited. Penguin Books’ Chairman John Makinso envisions a far more multimedia rich future for ebooks with the iPad. Therefore, for the present, Penguin will be selling most of its digital content in application form. In terms of finances, he anticipates that ebooks will grow from a lowly 4% of his company’s sales to a respectable 10% by next year. According to him, paying Apple 30% in fees for each book sold is better than the current 50% that retailers receive for printed books.
