Portable gaming console mods are not new, but the X-top Xbox 360 project is particularly noteworthy because it is hot news at the moment and is up for auction on eBay, though it is not technically a real “portable.”

As is the case with most complicated mods, the internals of the Xbox 360 have all been removed from the original chasis and put into the X-top’s case, which includes 8 total fans for significantly more efficient cooling, and everyone knows that the 360 desperately needs better cooling.

Several negatives about the X-top are the low-end Gateway LCD (for which it is difficult to fault the builder because there are few good 720p monitors left anymore), questionable case design (I have seen far prettier shapes and paint jobs), and the fact that no battery power supply solution has been implemented, so it is not a “true” laptop, only a transportable. For $2000, I would much rather have an Xbox 360 AND a gaming PC. Spending over months, hundreds of hours, and lots of money on outlandish mods is fun and educational, but buying them makes little sense.
