Legendary Shigeru Miyamoto says that he is devoting lots of energy into educational efforts for the Nintendo DS. Some Japanese students already use the handheld gaming system for learning (pictured above) in the classroom. When the new school year begins, Nintendo will introduce elementary and junior high schools to the DS as an educational tool, although exactly how this process will be implemented has not been documented to the public.

Nintendo is turning the DSi XL into an e-reader by releasing an e-book alongside its North American launch in a few weeks. With intense focus on gaming, Apple’s iPad is treading onto Nintendo territory, which the iPhone and iTouch have trespassed for years. Nintendo’s decision to target education and e-readers is a strategic move to fight back.
