Google’s Chinese research and advertising staff will remain in operation, but all searches from Google.cn have been forwarded to Google.com.hk, the Hong Kong site that Chinese officials cannot censor.

For sometime, Google has been tussling with the Chinese government over censorship of its search engine. Earlier this year, when Chinese hackers broke into Google servers and stole sensitive information, Google threatened to pull out of China. At an impasse for the past couple of months, Google and China have not been able to reach an agreement. Google insists that its move is legal, but Chinese officials are obviously not pleased. It remains to be seen how long the Chinese government will allow its citizens to access Google’s Hong Kong site.
