Hitachi’s 3.1″ IPS displays are gunning for Sharp’s 3.4″ version. Although smaller than the Sharp, Hitachi’s LCD also does not need the use of glasses, are IPS instead of TN, and produce the same 480×854 pixels. Nintendo now has two screens to select from for its 3DS.

Sharp made the first move, but Hitachi has countered with something potentially better. The IPS panels in the Hitachi have high color gamut (for a mobile display) that covers 70% of the NTSC spectrum. Most laptop LCDs, except all models of the MacBook Pro and higher end machines like Dell’s Studio XPS with the RGB option, are nowhere near that high.

- 3.1-inch (diagonal 8cm)
- Display size: 38.16 × 67.893 mm
- Display pixels: 480×854
- 2D Brightness: 400cd/m²
- Contrast ratio 1000:1
