…and is named after the iPad. German companies neofonie and 4tiitoo team up to introduce the €449 Linux WePad that has the ability to run Android apps. Europeans, Asians, and Americans…the only entrant missing is a South African tablet (District 9 Tablet?).
French eviGroup’s Paddle tablet did not receive the full press conference that the WePad did yesterday. A public presentation and a working prototype do lend more credibility to the WePad concept than the Paddle (and the fairy dust Wallet). CarryPad is doubtful that the WePad has enough steam in its engine to take down the iPad, citing the heavy weight (800 grams), low battery life (4 hours), and lack of “‘point of sale’ marketplace” as downers. I tend to concur, though not about the insignificant weight difference. The specifications, except for the screen resolution, are nothing spectacular either. ICD’s Gemini is far more intriguing as an Android and the HP Slate as a Windows 7 machine.
