Microsoft’s stab at semi-smartphones is a mess. First of all, the prices are inexplicable: on $70 per month voice and data Verizon contracts, the Kin ONE is $50 and the TWO $100 after $100 rebates. If the phones were special, then shelling out $70 monthly might be worthwhile, but they are not.

The reviews indicate that the KIN phones’ screens, cameras, voice and build quality are merely decent. Long battery life is the only praiseworthy part of the ONE and TWO. When it comes to the most crucial aspect of the phones, the interface (which is supposed to be the Kin’s piece de resistance), Engadget denounces it as “deeply frustrating and inconsistent.” I thought that the GUI would be befuddling, although the Zune HD graphics are pleasant on the eyes.

Microsoft’s Kin series can be considered a dumb smartphone, and at their going rates, average teenagers might have to lower their intelligence to buy one. Best Buy is accepting pre-orders today and delivers on May 13th.
