Sony had been selling each PS3 console at massive losses since its launch in 2006. The PS3 Slim cut production costs and simplified the system, allowing Sony to break almost even at $300 per unit. For the first time in the PS3’s life, Sony is going to turn a profit on its investment. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s DS and variants have sold so well worldwide that it should overtake the Playstation 2 as the best selling gaming system in history.

In America, the DS was number one in console sales for April, moving 440,800 copies. While these numbers are lower than previous months, Nintendo has still shipped over 129 million (the PS2 is at over 140 million) touchscreen DS handhelds.

For 2009, Sony lost $540 million US dollars in its PS3 division. However, since the PS3 Slim introduction, buyers have made it a top seller (though well behind the Wii and DS). Sony forecasts that it will sell 15 million PS3 systems, up from 13 million last year. With the upcoming Playstation Move, 3D PS3 gaming, and potentially a PSP2 as an answer to the iPod Touch/iPhone and Nintendo 3DS, Sony’s gaming business is looking upward. A cynic could remark that Sony has nowhere else to go but up.
