Why have computer manufacturers not popularized external graphics? Because laptop makers want you to upgrade your gaming notebook every few years. Unlike tower PCs, most laptops’ graphics are soldered onto their motherboards and cannot be replaced. The MSI GUS (Graphics Upgrade Solution) is attempting to externalize your GPU.

It looks techno-cool and is a godsend for laptop gamers who are stuck with weakling graphics but do not want to/cannot afford to upgrade their machines. GUS contains a 1Gb Radeon HD 5670 and plugs into an ExpressCard slot. The MSI case accepts any PCI Express card (size permitting) with a maximum 84W TDP, so the 61W Radeon 5670 is the limit right now. Because ExpressCard maxes out at “PCI-Express 2.0 1x bandwidth,” the 5670 is probably the fastest card that will not be bottlenecked by the interface. MSI expects USB 3.0 to provide a simpler and substantially speedier solution. Another benefit of GUS is that for graphic designers, it allows up to 4 displays –with the 5670 powering three and the laptop’s HDMI/VGA/DisplayPort outputting the fourth.
MSI is targeting $99-$109 for GUS and $169-$229 for GUS with the Radeon 5670, and although those prices sound intriguing, I am more interested in what MSI and Asus can do with an XGP for USB 3.0.
