In a MacWorld “shoot out” that proves smartphone cameras still trail behind dedicated cameras for image quality, the iPhone 4 came out on top with its 5-megapixel lens over notables like the unreleased Motorola Droid X and the HTC Evo 4G, both with 8-megapixel lenses (click the headline picture for an uncompressed 1605×1200 version).

Steve Jobs boasted about the camera quality on the iPhone 4, and according to MacWorld, the 5MP sensor in Apple’s new phone surpasses the Droid X and Evo 4G in photography and video capture fidelity.
The iPhone 4 had, by a healthy margin, the best exposure and color scores of the entire bunch, beating out even the point-and-shoot cameras. It did run into trouble in the sharpness and distortion categories, performing much lower than the pocket cameras and similarly to the Droid.
