Probably just a case of new gadget hysteria, but Microsoft’s redesigned Xbox 360 is hot commodity. It was long overdue for a complete revamp. Sony came out with its cheaper to produce PS3 Slim eons ago, and aside from shrinking the graphics and CPU die on the Xbox motherboard, Microsoft had done nothing since now.

Externally, the black Xbox is a drastic makeover from the previous console, but inside, the changes might be even more thorough, as the GPU and CPU have been integrated onto a single chip, so that the system runs cooler and requires only a single fan.

NPD numbers indicate that the Xbox 360 sold 451,700 units (all versions combined), beating out Nintendo’s Wii (422,500). Sony’s PS3 rounded out the console list with 304,800, while the Nintendo DS was once again the overall winner at 510,700 sales.

The 360 might also be getting a dashboard face-lift soon too:
