The new WiMAX 2 standard is coming with a much faster speed than the current existing standard, which tops at about 3-6 Mbps. According to WiMAX Forum’s marketing lead Declan Byrne, the new 802.16m WiMAX 2 would reach an average speed of over 100Mbps. It would use the same frequencies, such as the 2.5GHz band in the US.

The new standard will be verified in November, while people have to wait until its launching for commercial use in 2012. Most likely it will be used by Clear and Sprint, which have the largest WiMAX networks in the world.

This will surely be a great upgrade of mobile internet access. 100Mbps would outpace even the current landline access. Streaming 1080p video or other very high-bandwidth apps will be possible with this speed.

2012 is still so far away, don’t you think?
