Heliotrope, a rotating solar house built by German architect Rolf Disch, follows the sun throughout the day and produces five times the energy it consumes. The unused energy will not be stored but pumped into the grid for public use. In summer the house is kept cool as it has triple panes of thermally insulated glass, while in winter the house is heated with wood chips and solar thermal heating. EnSol, a Norwegian company, has patented a spray-on paint film that turns windows intosolar panels. The technology behind this paint is pretty simples: the film is made from metal nanoparticles, which sap up solar energy. There are hopes that this film could be used for entire buildings and not just windows. The patent has already been filed for and researchers are aiming to bring this product to market by 2016.
