Tons of people would love to go to space but don’t really have the means (or want to put the effort) to become an astronaut. Luckily, construction of the space launch facility Spaceport America in New Mexico is almost done, and the place should be fully operational for commercial flight in 2011. That’s right - commercial flight. So (almost) anyone can fly into space if they pay the for the ticket.
The Spaceport is currently in the process of putting in policies, procedures, staffing, and a visitor center. Welcome centers will also be built in nearby areas.
Other “specs” of the facility? It cost $212 million, measures 332,000 square yards, and has a state-of-the-art concrete runway that is 200 by 10,000 feet.
I guess if the space flights don’t work out, it could just be a normal airport. But let’s hope they do work out because that would be TOTALLY AWESOME.
