I thought this was an interesting find and discovery about the US Air Force. Apparently, they bought a ton of PlayStation 3 consoles recently. Curious course of action right? I would’ve thought they were gaming.
Apparently, they bought 1760 consoles and joined them with “168 separate graphical processing units and 84 coordinating servers” to form, essentially, a giant interactive computer. The Air Force boasts that it is the “fastest interactive computer in the entire Defense Department” as well as the 33rd largest computer of any kind in the world.
This computer will be used for things such as research into AI (artificial intelligence), fast processing of satellite pictures and enhancement of radar.
Though this is one incredible set-up, Air Force Research Lab’s Mark Barnell comments that “[they're] looking forward to working with the next generation of architecture”.
The largest computer (in terms of computation, and not size) I believe resides in a Google facility.
