German automaker Volkswagen is currently showing off their new XL1 prototype at the Qatar Motor Show, claiming that it gets 261 miles per gallon with its plug-in electric/gas hybrid engine.

The car has a 2.0 liter, 47hp turbo diesel engine and also a 27hp electric engine which can cover 22 miles alone, making it the most efficient hybrid vehicle in the world. After a testing about a hundred XL1s will be produced, with priority going to German customers.
