The director of I Am Number Four (which was released on Friday), DJ Caruso, has admitted that he used the iPad constantly whilst filming the sci-fi movie.
Caruso stated, “I got it, I don’t want to say as a toy, but then I realized about a week into prep that my storyboards were coming on it, my previs was on it, my script was on it, I don’t carry my script anymore. I started getting emails from two of my storyboard artists who work in Los Angeles and I have this application where I can mark up the boards — I’m a terrible drawer — and I can mark up the boards and send them back. It just became this amazing production tool.”
Not only this, but the iPad also came to the aid of Alex Pettyfer’s character role of John Smith, who has the ability to spread out beams of light from his hands which means that Pettyfer needed to wear wired flashlights during filming. The iPad functioned as an on/off button in this case.
Caruso has even exchanged app reccomendations with Stephen Fry. Although in this case we’re talking about the iPad, it seems that tablets in general, which seem to lie halfway between smartphones and laptops, are becoming ever more popular for their flexibility to be used in all sorts of situations, including this one.
