According to the managing director of Nokia India, d. Shivakumar, Nokia is working on releasing it’s first line of Windows Phone smartphones via a 12-month timeline. The 2012 release date will likely mean that the phones will be running the new Windows 7, aka Mango, which is to become available to manafacturers late this year. Shivakumar said that the Nokia-Microsoft partnership will bring life back to the fledgling smartphone OS, which only made up 3% of the total sales of smartphones at the end of 2010. Microsoft’s direct effort to challenge Apple’s iPod, introduced in 2006 under the Zune brand, is being abandoned after a failure to gain traction in the market. Japanese provider NTT Docomo has recently announced that customers can request the capability to remove SIM lock from any new Docomo device purchased after April 1st, 2011. Customers will be able to use their unlocked devices on other operators’ mobile networks by switching SIM cards, for example to use their Docomo handset overseas. More »
