It seems like the Japanese are always one step ahead in the realm of technology. The device featured in this article is certainly no exception. Introducing the ultra slim, ultra light-weight, waterproof MEDIAS N-06C from NEC!
Yes, you read that correctly: waterproof! Now, don’t be fooled by other gimmicky phones that claim to be “waterproof,” because this thing looks to be the real deal. Under waterproof specifications, the N-06C has achieved both IPX-5 and IPX-7 ratings. The IPX-5 rating is defined as a device that is “Protected against water jets - Water projected at all angles through a 6.3mm nozzle at a flow rate of 12.5 liters/min at a pressure of 30kN/m2 for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters.” The IPX-7 rating says that the device is “Protected against water immersion - Immersion for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter.” Now is that impressive or what?
But that’s certainly not all. In terms of hardware, the device (which will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread) will be sporting a 1GHz chip, a 4-inch 480 x 854 LCD, 1GB ROM, 512MB RAM, 802.11n WiFi and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p video. Additionally, the device is a mere 7.9 millimeters thick and weighs only 115 grams!
For a little better idea at what this fish phone will be packing, check out the full Japanese spec sheet below:

No word on a release date yet, but you can be sure that a lot of Japanese people will be jumping on this bad boy once it hits.
