Apple has recently filed a total of 18 patents, which include a patent that allows a touch display to act as a space-saving RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) tag reader. Other patents include iOS Maps and Compass app design, iPhone 4’s stainless steel band, and also a patent for reducing wait times in call centers.
The display that acts as an RFID transponder would save space as no RFID antennas would be needed. The tag reader can also be used for mobile payment system or allow the iPhone to double as a badge reader, which could replace employee security badges. This technology of simply swiping the iPhone to enter a secured area has already been used by Apple employees on the Cupertino campus.
It seems even more smartphones are integrating RFID and NFC technology, don’t you think?
