Researches have started playing with the idea of Piezoelectric Keyboards and the potential ability for you to use your laptop and be able to power it just from typing.
Playing off the idea of trying to harness the electricity that would be produced in a user’s “typing power,” they’re working with piezoelectric film to see if it would be possible.
A team from Australia’s RMIT University thinks it is. By placing a thin sheet of piezoelectric film into their test laptops, it should be able to concert the mechanical pressure into electrical energy.
So far, their research is attempting to find out how much energy can be captured (so far about 1/10th of the amount needed to power the avg. gadget) and then how to amplify that power stored, so it’s actually useful.
Currently, it isn’t anywhere close to being mass produced, so it’ll be a while before you can type to power up your laptop. But the concept idea leads an interesting way to how it could be used in other items, like shoes or clothes to power your mobile phone, or blood pressure to power a pacemaker, etc.
Too cool though, I hope they make great strides on this pretty soon. Just imagine how happy everyone’s electric bill would be!
