At CeBIT, a retail box of the soon to be released NVIDIA GTX 480Fermi” graphics card indicates that a minimum 600 watt power supply is needed. Good thing I have a reliable 750 watt PSU from Corsair. Who said that PC gaming was cheap? More »

NVIDIA is hosting a “Special ‘Must See’ Presentation” on March 26th at PAX East 2010. Via Twitter, the company has announced that its top-end GTX 480 and GTX 470 graphics cards will be available on March 26th. More »

If 256-bit AES hardware encryption is still not safe enough for your highly sensitive data, then Corsair’s Padlock 2 includes a digital lock that is nearly impossible for trespassers to pry into. At just a tad over $50, this drive is worth the investment for professional spies. More »

After mentioning it a fortnight ago at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony is finally introducing its new TransferJet wireless SD cards to the market… in Japan (surprise, surprise). More »

It is pretty common knowledge that brand name computers all use parts (motherboards by Asus, hard drives by Toshiba, RAM by HNIX, etc.) not made by the company whose name is inscribed on the casing, but few people realize that all major laptops originate out of several major factories. Taiwanese companies Quanta and Compal make up more than half of all notebooks sold worldwide. Quanta Computer Inc. is the second largest manufacturer and has a client list that includes Apple, Acer, HP, Lenovo, Dell, and more. Compal Electronics Corp. surged ahead of its rival this year, reporting sales records, and also supplies wares to many of Quanta’s patrons. More »

Originally scheduled for a November 2009 launch, nVidia has pushed back the release of its “Fermi” Graphics Processing Unit until March. Hard at work, the company has supposedly been ironing out kinks before it is ready to unleash Fermi. Already trailing ATi in the ultra high performance sector, nVidia desperately needs this GPU to be everything that it is promising. With already stiff competition in the integrated graphics department from Intel (whose 4500M dominates all Intel based budget and consumer laptops and some desktops) and AMD’s Fushion (ATi), nVidia must strike back against arch rival ATi in the mid to upper tier markets. Ever since our family purchased our first personal computer in 1997, I have been building my own tower machines. During the past twelve years, around 8 custom-built PCs (and countless laptops, as well as Mac desktops like iMacs and Cubes!) have made their ways into our household. I have never purchased a brand name PC and likely never will. Most PC gamers and heavy number crunching users also choose to build their own machines because they can select the best parts at the best prices and not have to pay for extras that they do not need. I liken custom building PCs to a buffet: get what you want and only what you want. More »

Good sound comes from the quality of the speakers, right? Wrong. In this case, the good sound comes from the incredibly expensive speakers and subwoofer. The new McIntosh MXA60 Integrated Audio System costs a whopping $7,500, but don’t worry, this is from the same company that created the $250,000 McIntosh Reference System. The McIntosh MXA60 has a 75 watt per channel amplifier, a CD/SACD/MP3 player, vacuum tube preamplifier, an AM/FM/RBDS Tuner, and 2-way bass reflex custom loudspeakers. More »

Advanced, way beyond it’s time, the UD7 USB display that lets you recieve Twitter updates. Can your USB do that? The UD7 can. The UD7 is a truly amazing USB drive that lets you connect with any computer, and lets you view Tweets on Twitter, View pictures, and a digital calendar. Think of it like a mini computer screen, constantly giving you system statistics about your CPU, all while acting like a mini Internet device. More »

AT&T is being very generous this holiday season, not to the point where they’ll pay your bill, but generous enough. Today, AT&T announced that they would would be giving half-off many Blackberry handsets, including the brand new Bold 9700, and the Bold 9000 as well as other devices like the Curve 8900, 8320, 8520 and 8310. Of course this is after the mail in rebate and requires a two year contract, but if you’re going to get a two year contract with them anyway, you might as well cash in on this offer, especially since it’s only for the holiday season. While RIM is ruling the AT&T sales, that’s not all they have to offer for the holidays. More »

Cisco is beginning to tap into a new market, away from networking devices and wireless routers. Their latest piece of tech is the Cisco FlipShare TV, which streams video from your PC straight to your HDTV, so you don’t have to frustrate yourself, squinting at a small little monitor. The entire FlipShare TV system comes in 3 parts, a USB dongle for sending the signal to your PC, a handy remote control, and then there is the main device which acts like a standard cable TV box in order to deliver the signal from the dongle to your TV and is fitted with an HDMI port as well as standard RCA ports for AV. Looks like Nintendo is up to something. Nintendo’s two biggest manufacturer’s, Mitsumi and Hosiden, are seeing orders drop for the Nintendo Wiis. This could simply mean that we’ll be seeing upgraded Wiis in the near future.

Nintendo has to update the Wii sometime soon. The software on the Wii is getting ancient while the games continue to bring in people of all ages. In order to compete in the HD world that we live in today, Nintendo will have to upgrade their graphics on the console to provide HD video. Without an HD Wii, not many will be buying the new console. If Nintendo comes out with an HD version of their Wii system, they can rake in money like they did when the Wii was first released. More »

Acer, the people who brought us excellent netbooks, are now planning to introduce the Chrome OS in their upcoming netbooks, starting in mid-2010. While that’s a long way off, it’s a sign that Microsoft is already starting to get competition in the netbook department and they have a lot to worry about.

Acer is planning to become the first netbook manufacturer to do this and most likely won’t be the last. From what we’ve seen in the Chrome OS, it’s perfect for netbooks and low powered machines. Chrome OS will be a viable alternative for many PC fans as the cost of netbooks will be lowered due to Manufacturer’s no longer having to pay Microsoft a Windows tax.

Can’t wait for some of the other manufacturers to join in and give MS some competition.

For those of you that remember the CrunchPad, the device that was supposed to compete with netbooks from TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington, it’s all over. Arrington wrote on his TechCrunch blog today that the project to create the CrunchPad, ended abruptly “over nothing more than greed, jealousy and miscommunication.”

For those of you not sure what the CrunchPad is or was supposed to be, it was supposed to be the next generation internet touchscreen device that launches only a web browser with no hard drive or any memory system (although Arrington did say hackers could have installed either Chrome or Windows 7). The idea behind it was genius but of course with any kind of product comes the hurdles and it seems like the CrunchPad just couldn’t get its biggest one, the people behind it. More »
