Microsoft’s Mix10 conference confirms many crucial things about the company’s agenda: it is turning into Apple but is late to the game. Droves of smartphone zealots are excited about Windows Phone 7’s prospects, yet much of what Microsoft is doing already exists, and worst of all, quite a few of the complaints about Apple’s iPhone will not be addressed by WP7. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 presentation today unveiled nothing that has not been widely rumored for months: there will be no multitasking; Microsoft’s Marketplace store is the only way to obtain WM7 apps; HTC HD2 will not be upgraded to WM7. In a nutshell, Microsoft is following the strictly isolationist iPhone instead of open source Android (surprise!). In more cheerful news, Samsung, Asus, and LG all demoed WM7 devices. More »

Even Bill Gates has, on numerous occasions, expressed admiration of the iPhone, although he forbids himself and his family from owning Apple products (those poor souls). Steve Ballmer uses Windows Mobile smartphones, but many of his employees secretly cherish their iPhones. More »

Charlie Kindel (not Amazon Kindle) of Microsoft played with his Windows Phone 7 prototype yesterday, and while the user interface looks fancy, there is not anything terribly new or exciting. More »

Microsoft beat Apple to the race and presented its Courier awhile back, but most of the media still focused on Apple’s January 27th event, when the iPad was eventually demonstrated. Despite the ambivalent reception from observers, Apple stocks rose 8 points yesterday when it informed the public of the iPad’s ship date. I, for one, am far more intrigued by what Microsoft has in the pipes than Apple, even though I am a firm devotee to the latter. More »

Apple’s iPad is shipping on April 3rd, but Microsoft leaked its Courier tablet many months ago. Today, Engadget got an exclusive rendered demonstration of the device. More »

Today, more than 100 showed up to honor the passing of a beloved companion… Internet Explorer 6… Wait… WHAT!? You read it right. Today they had a funeral for IE6. More »

These sales figures would have The Beatles in its heyday jealous. Despite the wide criticism that Vista received, consumer confidence in Microsoft has not dampened too much, as the Redmond behemoth’s follow-up operating system has sold over 90 million copies, most of which are to home users. Many observers like to philosophize deeply about issues that generally can be answered with the simplest explanation. I rarely agree with Steve Ballmer, but his succinct (and I would have thought, salient) explanation for Google’s whirlwind rise to power is because of its efficient search engine: “The number one thing that Google benefits from in search is that they did it right, first.” More »

This is official breaking news: Microsoft has declared that no Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone, not even the HTC HD2, will be upgraded to Windows Phone 7. Aside from having two buttons too many (Microsoft stipulates only three buttons), the powerful HD2 lacks “some hardware components,” according to Tony Wilkinson, who is the Business Operations Director for Microsoft Australia. Microsoft has unveiled its first prototype (made by LG) smartphone running Windows Phone 7. Facing rigorous competition from Android and iPhone OS (not to mention RIM and Symbian), Microsoft announced Windows Phone 7 a few weeks ago and has since chosen to rename and relaunch further development of Windows Mobile 6.5 as “Windows Phone Starter Edition.” More »

You all know about the new Windows 7 commercials, right? “I’m a PC, and Windows 7 was my idea!” Well, CollegeHumor just took this concept to a whole new level. More »

Microsoft and Yahoo announced on Thursday that they’re getting married! Well… not literally. The two companies are coming together in an attempt to rival search-engine giant Google. More »

Sure, Windows Phone 7 just released, but that doesn’t mean that Windows Mobile 6.5 is dead just quite yet. Apparently when Windows Phone 7 becomes available for retail, Windows Mobile 6.5 will be called Windows Phone Classic. More »

Most of the attention at Mobile World Congress centers around Android and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Phone 7 announcement, but HTC is one of the few companies that is still Windows Mobile 6.5 loyalists. The HD Mini, which is a more affordable version of the HTC HD2, runs Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Presumably, the HD Mini will not be upgradable to Windows Phone 7. More »
