President Obama made it clear on Wednesday during his State of the Union address that the United States will not accept second place. There is no doubt that 2009 has been a huge year for the mobile internet craze. Last year, mobile internet usage jumped an astounding 75% in the third quarter alone. Car companies are now trying to cash in on this new craze by developing technology for automobiles that makes them wireless hot spots. While Japan has already been using such technology as early as 1997 (no surprises there…), the Western world is still toying with different methods to try to make this new concept a success. Companies such as Mercedes and General Motors are exploring the development of their own separate hardware that will have to be purchased for internet use in the car. Lasers are all the buzz these days and aside from light shows and weapons, they have actually come to use as a safety “net”. Thanks to a brilliant concept designed by Hanyoung Lee, pedestrians can now cross the street without having to worry about cars running a red light, or getting hit for that matter. The idea of the concept is to set up laser towers on either sides of the crosswalk so that a laser wall is projected in front of drivers when the light turns red. When the lights turn green again, the lasers will disappear and will tell pedestrians to wait on either side until the light turns red. More »
