Barnes & Nobles competitor to the Amazon Kindle, The Nook, has apparently sold out. The New York Times is reporting that B&N didn’t think they’d get such a hit on their hands and are now saying they don’t have enough for everyone this holiday season.
Like Barnes & Noble, this is a big surprise to me as well. While the price is competitive with the Kindle, I didn’t think the Nook had enough to compete with the Kindle’s popularity and new print and commercial ads. To help those who might get upset at B&N for not having enough Nooks, (sounds like Nukes when you say it out loud), Barnes & Nobles is offering place holder certificates for those still interested in buying the device. The next batch of shipment will begin on January 4th, 2010.
IREX Technology, a Dutch company, has found a supplier for eBooks on their e-Reader. While Barnes & Nobles will provide eBooks for IREX, it is not an exclusive deal. This is the second partnership Barnes & Nobles has put together, the first with Plastic Logic.
IREX is releasing a 8.1-inch touchscreen eReader with 3G wireless connection. IREX CEO Kevin Hamilton, said IREX will be offering content from various outlets, not just Barnes & Nobles, “We will change the dynamics of the consumer market – users want to easily purchase content from a variety of sources and we allow them to read it on an IREX eReader as well as other devices.”
With IREX offering 3G service, touch screen and partnering with a reputable book company, they may give Amazon and its ebook store a run for its money. No other eReader in the market has offered 3G service other than Amazon with its Kindle. More »
If you’re in Barnes and Noble now, you’ll notice that AT&T is offering free Wi-Fi. Last year Barnes and Nobles, teamed with AT&T to provide free Wi-Fi for iPhone customers but now that’s being extended for regular Barnes and Noble customers. This news also comes after AT&T cut a deal with Barnes and Nobles to be the exclusive 3G provider for the upcoming Plastic Logic eReader that will have eBooks exclusively. So, next time you’re in there reading one of their books (you know you’re not buying it), take advantage of the free Wi-Fi.

Yesterday morning we reported that Barnes & Nobles struck a deal with Plastic Logic to provide exclusive content for their device. Now, another major company is jumping into the foray. AT&T is announcing a partnership with Plastic Logic to provide 3G service for wireless downloads to the eBook reader ala Sprint for the Amazon Kindle. More »
Well, well, well, looks like Barnes & Nobles is looking to make a splash in the eBook world with two big announcements yesterday. The first, is their launch of an eBook store and the second is their partnership with Plastic Logics to release a new eBook reader with exclusive content supplied by Barnes and Nobles. More »
