It has been a long and painful journey, but Adobe has finally given Flash 10.1 to its mobile platform partners using the following operating systems: “Android, BlackBerry, webOS, Windows Phone 7 Series, LiMo, MeeGo and Symbian.” Flash 10.1 on Android requires 2.2 FroYo, which is unofficially available for Google’s Nexus One and will be run on many Android smartphones by Q4 of this year. Adobe had kept its supporters waiting, but now the “F” ball is in their courts. Let the hunt for crashes, bugs, and security holes begin. Nokia is also anticipating a massive hit in its global smartphone market share to Google Android handsets and Apple iPhone. Among the four main American carriers, BlackBerry has slipped from the top spot. Sprint’s top seller is the HTC Evo 4G; T-Mobile’s front-runner is the MyTouch 3G Slide; the Droid Incredible and Motorola Droid are kings of Verizon, and the iPhone 4 is obviously AT&T’s darling now. From Htcyou: For the first time since its unveiling last year, Android has outsold the iPhone during a fiscal quarter. Android handsets captured 28% of the market, while the iPhone was third with 21%. Both trail BlackBerry’s 36% lead. However, these numbers must be kept in perspective: the iPhone 3GS is an EOL (End of Life) product that has been severely affected by the Gizmodo leak; there are only two iPhone models available, and one network carries them, while several prominent Android smartphones have launched in Q1, including the Motorola Devour and Google Nexus One. From Htcyou: Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen misspoke during a Fox interview when he said that Flash 10.1 would not be available until the second half of this year. What he meant was that new hardware with 10.1 installed would not be out before Q3 2010. Adobe has clarified the misunderstanding by stating that the plug-in itself will arrive for download prior to the second half of this year. More »

I feel for Jon Rubinstein. His company was the pioneer of the smartphone forerunner, the PDA (although Apple’s Newton started it all). In the late 1990s, Palm was an enviable company, but its failure to transition (successfully) its products to the smartphone market has doomed the once glorious creator of numerous beloved PDAs.
