There are so many robots out in the world doing the simple tasks that we are too lazy to do. The latest robot helper is dubbed “Project Romeo”, which is being created to help the visually impaired and elderly. This project is in its early stages but the plan is to create a 1.2m ~ 1.5m two legged robot.

The project, scheduled for completion in 2011 will end with a 30 kg robot name Romeo, armed with helping ability. As you can see in the video (after the break), what looks like a cross between Megaman and a Panasonic toy, is actually a prototype, currently called Nao. More »


Technology for the blind has been improving every year but never far enough for them to use a device like the iPhone, until now. Designed by Yosi Bar-Cohen, the iPhone would use a “Braille Touch Screen”, similar to that of the braille phone, by Samsung we’ve written about earlier. Yosi thought that Electroactive polymers could work to turn the letters and numbers into braille format so that the visually impaired could actually touch the words.

The responsive screen would form the dots along with the touch of the user, making the user experience on the iPhone much better for them. It is great that the blind finally get to use some great technology and that there are technological advancements out there that can help them. Yosi has done his part to help mankind, now its all up to Apple to implement this into the iPhone as we’ve seen it integrated with their computers already. More »


It seems like a lot of technology is being built for the visually/hearing impaired. The latest gadget is the coffee mug, designed to work so that spills don’t happen when the person doesn’t know when to stop pouring. The Braun Bell concept mug plays a sound when the liquid being poured hits one of the three levels in the mug. More »


We’ve all heard of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Technology), more widely known as the chip put into animals to track them. Well, Yelamarthi and two senior engineering students from Michigan University have developed the SmartCane for the visually impaired designed with RFID technology. The SmartCane can search and find electrical navigation tags installed in buildings, which can help the visually impaired across the street. More »
