Put aside the $2900 package price for a moment and just consider the technology itself: only a handful of movies and shows are in 3D, and among them, about two or three are actually good, and none of them, except Monsters versus Aliens, is even for sale. More »

Famed hacker, George Hotz has cracked Sony’s PS3 –no mean feat considering that no one has been able to hack its copyright protection up until now. Geohot is responsible for hacking iPhone 3.1 as well. More »

Continued from part one… Although CCFL backlit LCDs cannot match plasma for black levels, the best LED LCDs have some tricks to compensate for the technology’s inherent weakness. Local dimming allows LEDs to adjust individual lights (which illuminate parts of the screen rather than the entirety of it) to different levels of brightness. Side-lit LEDs and CCFL bulbs cannot accomplish this and suffer poorer blacks and lower contrast as a result. Still, ignoring the numbers, I purport that the best plasma displays produce deeper and better blacks than the best LED LCDs. More »

Once merely toys for the wealthy, large 1080p plasma displays finally became affordable in 2009. Samsung has a new line of suspiciously inexpensive HDTVs, one of which is the PN50B530, retailing for $1299.99 Canadian. Presently, Americans have the PN50B550 at $1399.99 (although regularly discounted to the $1200 range), but specs on both models are identical except for the number of inputs, and the latter’s internet connectivity. At its price tag, the PN50B530 is an entry-level 1080p TV, but it has image quality that is far from low-end. More »

From Ningin: A big surprise from the Sony and Panasonic team. Each of the two 25GB layers has been refined to 33.4GB per layer. They have been working on a refinement for a while now, as the weakest chain in their technology is NOT their lasers. Why fix the body when you can fix the brain? How does this work, without buying any additional parts? A firmware update (FREE DOWNLOAD) to your blu-ray player or PS3 will tell your lasers to read more precisely and pack data more closely within the same space efficiently. (Improving error check.) A sobering number for consumer electronics companies is 7.8, which is how many percentage points revenue dropped in 2009 from the previous year: from $179 billion to $165 billion. However, tech analysts are hopeful for some key products to emerge and bring sales back up. More »

2009 served up plenty of pleasant surprises but also head-shaking disappointments too. Here is my top five epic fails of the year, led by the lowering of sonic fidelity, some computing complaints, Blu-Ray failures, gaming gaffs, and OLED delays. More »

From Wirebot:
When the Playstation 3 initially launched back in 2006 it came with two things, a high gloss exterior and a hefty price tag. The $499 (20GB) and $599 (60GB) price points gave gamers’ wallets a reason to gasp. Frugal gamers everywhere were given more of a reason to leave the Sony camp and purchase the Xbox 360, which were initially priced at $299 and $399 depending on the model. Loyal Playstation fans have always justified the higher price by stating that the Xbox 360 has less features and charges to play online, so in the end it equaled out to around the same price in their logic. This argument was well grounded until both systems received a price cut early this year. Now, it appears that after you add up the equipment necessary to make both systems technical equivilants, the Playstation 3 is the cheaper deal. But, don’t take my word for it, lets do the math. Remember once upon a time when Blu-Ray and HD-DVD bought for the next generation DVD format? Great times right? Well, for those of you “losers”, HD-DVD fans, you’re finally getting some help, at least from Warner Bros.
For $4.95, Warner Bros, will let you swap your HD-DVD for a Blu-Ray title. Yup, you can get rid of that HD-DVD you no longer want and join the masses with Blu-Ray content. There is one small caveat, a $6.95 shipping fee but you can swap up to 25 titles, so just pack them all in and ship it out. It’s not such a bad deal considering Blu-Ray disks are still expensive. Here is how Blu-Ray grades their movies, they base it all on the movie itself, audio, video, and extras. More »
