2009 served up plenty of pleasant surprises but also head-shaking disappointments too. Here is my top five epic fails of the year, led by the lowering of sonic fidelity, some computing complaints, Blu-Ray failures, gaming gaffs, and OLED delays. More »

When the Playstation 3 initially launched back in 2006 it came with two things, a high gloss exterior and a hefty price tag. The $499 (20GB) and $599 (60GB) price points gave gamers’ wallets a reason to gasp. Frugal gamers everywhere were given more of a reason to leave the Sony camp and purchase the Xbox 360, which were initially priced at $299 and $399 depending on the model. Loyal Playstation fans have always justified the higher price by stating that the Xbox 360 has less features and charges to play online, so in the end it equaled out to around the same price in their logic. This argument was well grounded until both systems received a price cut early this year. Remember once upon a time when Blu-Ray and HD-DVD bought for the next generation DVD format? Great times right? Well, for those of you “losers”, HD-DVD fans, you’re finally getting some help, at least from Warner Bros.
For $4.95, Warner Bros, will let you swap your HD-DVD for a Blu-Ray title. Yup, you can get rid of that HD-DVD you no longer want and join the masses with Blu-Ray content. There is one small caveat, a $6.95 shipping fee but you can swap up to 25 titles, so just pack them all in and ship it out. It’s not such a bad deal considering Blu-Ray disks are still expensive. If you can’t beat’em, join’em. That’s Toshiba’s motto when it comes to coming out with their first Blu-Ray player. Toshiba was the company behind the short lived, HD-DVD format, many studios dropped in favor of the more popular Blu-Ray DVD’s. Shortly after losing the format war, studios decided not to sell HD-DVD’s, putting an end to what Toshiba was hoping, would be one of their major success stories. More »
