CrunchGear reports that according to a tipster, Dell’s first mobile phone The Mini 3i, will be coming to the United States. The mini 3i was originally China only, but apparently Dell wants to bring the Mini 3i stateside to compete with Android offerings from HTC, Motorola and Samsung.
The tipster also stated that the phone was “cheap and plasticky, like the Pre.” It will purportedly carry a 5 megapixel camera instead of the 3 megapixel unit found in its Chinese brother and run a modified version of Android that may not support all applications.
All this Android news these days is exciting; but will Dell actually be a serious competitor? Their last portables like the Axim PDA and the Jukebox MP3 player were utter failures. I think they need to find the spirit that makes their Mini series of netbooks so successful and build a cell phone that embodies that spirit.
The Motorola ROKR E1 was Apple’s first foray into the cellular phone market back in the day when Macs still had PowerPC processors and the Motorola Razr was the most popular handset. It was basically a candybar phone made by Motorola that had an iTunes player and the ability to sync to the iTunes desktop client.

People found that the interface is extremely slow and clumsy, the 100 song limit makes any iPod much better, and the overall feature set didn’t really stand out from other phones on the market. I have actually only seen a dozen or so in the wild. More »

On one side, the phone looks identical to that of a digital camera, while the other side holds a standard looking Samsung phone. The SCH - W880 has a 3.3 inch AMOLED display with 800×480 resolution, 4 GB of built in storage, T-DMB (Rumored to ship with WiFi and GPS later), and the 12-megapixel camera with 3X optical zoom which records 720P HD video. Although I’ve been a loyal Palm user for two years (Treo 680), it took me less than a month to get sick of its interface and OS. So, why even bother? For one, at the time it had the largest library of smartphone apps, and secondly, it was easy to install app launchers (which made the interface bearable) and it provided a lot of leeway for customization.
