At E3, Nintendo took the covers off its next DS handheld, the 3DS. The device features three cameras for 3D photography and a 3.53-Inch top screen complemented by 3.02-Inch version on the bottom. Also, the 3DS comes with a “motion sensor, a gyro sensor and even a Slide Pad that allows 360-degree analog input.” More »


Is this a picture of Nintendo’s 3DS in test kit form? Initially, the board was thought to be a DS (that is why I ignored it), but now, rumors are rampant that it is actually a 3DS, which Nintendo has sent to the FCC for approval of the Wi-Fi module. More »


Sony had been selling each PS3 console at massive losses since its launch in 2006. The PS3 Slim cut production costs and simplified the system, allowing Sony to break almost even at $300 per unit. For the first time in the PS3’s life, Sony is going to turn a profit on its investment. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s DS and variants have sold so well worldwide that it should overtake the Playstation 2 as the best selling gaming system in history. More »


Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has revealed some stimulating details about the 3DS handheld. Also, Iwata is singling out Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch platform as the “enemy of the future.” More »


Nintendo will be replacing the amazingly popular DS with a new system temporarily called the 3DS, which will allow gamers to enjoy “3D effects without the need for any special glasses.” The 3DS is scheduled for release on or before March 2011 and will be demoed at E3 in June. More »


In 2009, overall video game sales revenues declined from by $1.1 billion down to $9.9 billion total, but Apple’s share quintupled from 1% to 5%. In the portable gaming breakdown (where it really matters to Apple), Apple’s surge is even more dramatic: from 5% in 2008 to 19% last year. More »


Legendary Shigeru Miyamoto says that he is devoting lots of energy into educational efforts for the Nintendo DS. Some Japanese students already use the handheld gaming system for learning (pictured above) in the classroom. When the new school year begins, Nintendo will introduce elementary and junior high schools to the DS as an educational tool, although exactly how this process will be implemented has not been documented to the public. NPD reports that for the first time in several years, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has earned first place in the monthly gaming console sales rankings. The 360 moved 422,000 units. Meanwhile, over in Japan, Sony’s PSP go continues to be a disaster, with 3-month sales totals of only 17,618 handhelds. More »


Nintendo has declared that its new DSi XL, which will debut on March 28th for $190, is also an e-reader. Apple’s iPad and iPod Touch/iPhone are breaking into the Japanese gaming corporation’s territory; the DSi XL is return fire that will a title called “100 Classic Books,” which includes works from Shakespeare and Twain. With the release of Nintendo’s new Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver games for the Nintendo DS, comes a nifty peripheral that is sure to have any Pokemon addict excited (yes, I am a Pokemon NERD) or shed some pounds off of an ambitious trainer. I was somewhat surprised with the PSP Go’s launch. It was not the device that was unexpected but rather its price and form factor. Usually, when a portable gaming machine (or a console) has been out for years, a company improves it while lowering prices. Instead, Sony went an unconventional route and radically altered the PSP’s functionality by releasing the PSP Go, which removed the ability to play hundreds of existing UMD-only games that millions of PSP owners already have in their collection. In addition to this bizarre move, Sony also made the PSP Go a “premium” PSP and decided to sell it for substantially more than the standard unit. More »
