Nintendo will be replacing the amazingly popular DS with a new system temporarily called the 3DS, which will allow gamers to enjoy “3D effects without the need for any special glasses.” The 3DS is scheduled for release on or before March 2011 and will be demoed at E3 in June. More »


Legendary Shigeru Miyamoto says that he is devoting lots of energy into educational efforts for the Nintendo DS. Some Japanese students already use the handheld gaming system for learning (pictured above) in the classroom. When the new school year begins, Nintendo will introduce elementary and junior high schools to the DS as an educational tool, although exactly how this process will be implemented has not been documented to the public. NPD reports that for the first time in several years, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has earned first place in the monthly gaming console sales rankings. The 360 moved 422,000 units. Meanwhile, over in Japan, Sony’s PSP go continues to be a disaster, with 3-month sales totals of only 17,618 handhelds. More »


Nintendo has declared that its new DSi XL, which will debut on March 28th for $190, is also an e-reader. Apple’s iPad and iPod Touch/iPhone are breaking into the Japanese gaming corporation’s territory; the DSi XL is return fire that will a title called “100 Classic Books,” which includes works from Shakespeare and Twain. I was somewhat surprised with the PSP Go’s launch. It was not the device that was unexpected but rather its price and form factor. Usually, when a portable gaming machine (or a console) has been out for years, a company improves it while lowering prices. Instead, Sony went an unconventional route and radically altered the PSP’s functionality by releasing the PSP Go, which removed the ability to play hundreds of existing UMD-only games that millions of PSP owners already have in their collection. In addition to this bizarre move, Sony also made the PSP Go a “premium” PSP and decided to sell it for substantially more than the standard unit. More »

For once the North American folks don’t get shafted again by Nintendo. Nintendo is set to make the Black Wiimote available this holiday season with a black Wii Jacket and a standalone black Nunchuck. I wish they were also rolling out a Black Wii but can’t hope for too much these days.

Nintendo is also rolling out two new colors for the Nintendo DSi, pink and white. Looks like Nintendo is finally giving us North American folks a much needed color change, especially for the, now very dull looking white Wiimotes. More »


Poor Japan. While some of you are jumping for joy for the new DSi colors, they’re actually quite fugly.

Straying away from the neons, Nintendo has made a “pink, green and blue” DSi that are in very bland shades. They’ll be available in only Japan in March whereas the rest of the world still waits for the DSi to debut in April. Aw shucks! More »


Nintendo is keen on showing that its imminent DSi isn’t just a simple rehash with a few cameras installed, with much of the improvement under the hood.
