From Ningin: In most American high schools, May is the time to bust out the yearbooks, go to prom and maybe say your final goodbyes. Everything done this month has to be memorable. It’s no different at Mixr High. Only, we’re not saying goodbye to you — nor are we an actual high school. We’re also probably won’t go to prom with you if you ask us. (We’ll sign your yearbooks though.) We just want you to have a Memorable May with Mixr. More »

The mother of all online video rental services, Netflix, has begun shipping discs for its Nintendo Wii video streaming subscription. For $8.99 a month, Wii subscribers can partake in all that they can watch online but only in standard definition since Nintendo’s console is not 720p. More »

James Cameron loves the environment and abhors global warming. For years, he, along with many Hollywood VIPs, and Al Gore have been leading the crusade against pollution and carbon emissions. Avatar, Cameron’s $2.6 billion goldmine is being released on Earth Day because, well, the film is so environmentally friendly since the good guys in the movie tell us as much. The DVD and Blu-Ray versions of Avatar that are due out April 22nd will be unadorned releases, with no extras and no 3D. Cameron wants people to buy the 2D edition now, so that he can get all of them to buy the 3D special cut in November (or December) as well. The great news is that Avatar is magical and its millions of discs and plastic wrappers will contribute no pollution to the environment whatsoever. More »

Put aside the $2900 package price for a moment and just consider the technology itself: only a handful of movies and shows are in 3D, and among them, about two or three are actually good, and none of them, except Monsters versus Aliens, is even for sale. More »

Remember once upon a time when Blu-Ray and HD-DVD bought for the next generation DVD format? Great times right? Well, for those of you “losers”, HD-DVD fans, you’re finally getting some help, at least from Warner Bros.

For $4.95, Warner Bros, will let you swap your HD-DVD for a Blu-Ray title. Yup, you can get rid of that HD-DVD you no longer want and join the masses with Blu-Ray content. There is one small caveat, a $6.95 shipping fee but you can swap up to 25 titles, so just pack them all in and ship it out. It’s not such a bad deal considering Blu-Ray disks are still expensive. Somewhere, I’ve got files from the first computer I ever brought for myself on a few CD-RW discs. At this point I’m pretty sure they’ve been rendered unreadable due to time’s cruel march. CDs and DVDs just like cassette tapes and floppy disks before them degrade over time if not stored properly. I’ve since moved all my old data onto my new comp and am currently shopping around for an external hard drive to call my own, but this new product from Utah-based startup Millenniata might be another option. This is not so much gadget news but still funny, and very stupid on the part of a mailman. Myles Weathers, a 49-year-old postal worker is facing five years in prison for stealing over 3,000 Netflix DVDs from a Massachusetts distribution center. He was caught after video surveillance showed him stealing the DVD’s.

What my question is, why couldn’t this man just make the copies of the DVD’s and then just put them back. I know many people who burn their Netflix DVD’s on to their computers or through a DVD burner. It’s not a thing that requires much science. If you were planning to do this, you might as well think it through and come up with a good plan. Even if he were to take them, burn it and return it. I doubt many people would have noticed anyway. Been holding off on buying a Blu-ray player because of the outrageous prices? When they were first released, the only “affordable” player was the PlayStation 3 at around $500, but prices on players have steadily been coming down the past few years, finally crossing $200 this past holiday season.
