More news for eBook fans. Interead, the people behind Cool-er, the once cheapest eBook in the market, is planning to update their Cool-er devices with 3G and WiFi.

I was a fan of the original Cool-er device, just because they were the cheapest in the market, had many different colors to choose from and looked like an iPod. But now with updates features, (that are available on many other devices like Kindle and Nook), it’ll be another option for consumers. Now if they could keep the MSRP competitive to the Kindle and Nook, Cool-er 3G could take away some customers. Expect the device to drop in mid 2010.

Amazon continues to chug along this holiday season. Today they announced in a press release that November was the best month for them ever in terms of Kindle sales. They didn’t specify how many Kindles they’ve sold but it’s safe to say, they’ve sold a lot.

That’s a grand statement considering Amazon also sells Apple iPods, which are usually at the top of Christmas lists every year. This year it seems like eReaders are the way to go, as Barnes & Nobles announced earlier this month, that they’re Nook device was sold out till January.

Of course, part of Amazon’s increased sales were due to the decrease in price to $259 from $360 earlier this year and introducing a world edition in October. Since there are no hard numbers, we’ll just have to take Amazon’s word for it. They wouldn’t lie to us, right?

Not only have eReaders leading to the downfall of books, but now they’re taking it to another level. The latest eReader, the Alex, created by Spring Design, is a dual e-reader and tablet, something the designers are calling a Duet Navigator. The bottom of the device sports a 3.5 inch LCD screen to display bright pictures and the top holds a 6 inch electronic paper screen to display e-ink pages, for longer reading periods.

The ereader runs Google Android and gives the user the option of viewing web pages through WiFi or 3G. This eReader is great for users who want to be able to access the books on the go for heavier reading, but don’t want to give up the web browsing experience. More »

The Amazon Kindle is one of the best selling e-readers out there and it’s about to get even more media attention with its rumored release in the UK. TheBookseller.com says that they got “authoritative sources” that Amazon is looking to take their Kindle overseas. One source says that Amazon has arranged everything needed for a release in the U.K., and an announcement may be due as early as next week.

If the Kindle is announced in the UK during the Frankfurt Book Fair, then it might get a good amount of media attention, with the spotlight being on books already. This will give Amazon a chance to get back the customers they lost to other e-book services in England and will get their overall sales up although it is no doubt that the Kindle will do well in almost any new market. E-readers are the thing of the future, quickly replacing books in libraries and schools. Users of e-readers have agreed that the Kindle is a good choice, making book reading a breeze. Well, it seems that the Kindle will be getting a bit of competition from the IREX DR800SG, which is supposed to be the “Kindle Killer”. The IREX is also competing against other high end models such as Sony’s new Reader Daily Edition.

Features Beat Price

While the IREX does cost more than the Kindle and the new Sony eeader, it’s features cover up the extra cash users dish out for it. To start it all off, the IREX screen is bigger than the Kindle and the Sony ereader, topping out at 8.1 inches, making it much easier to read books on. When Amazon was designing the Kindle, they didn’t think to add touch screen capabilities, giving Sony and IREX the lead with their newest touch screen interface and easy to navigate buttons. Included with the IREX is wireless capabilities delivered by Verizon, and a Gobi chipset-built in for worldwide wireless use. The IREX lacks a web browser, unlike its competitors but does have other features that mask this fact. For example, the IREX has a rotating screen (Manual, no accelerometer), a 2GB SD card, 750,00 books to choose from (Almost double the amount of the Kindle). ePub “DRM Solutions” format, bookmarks, search, and the ability to download content to device abroad (Available Soon). Yesterday we reported ASUS was planning to release a dual-screen Eee reader by the end of this year. We have more details and it’s off the hook. Asus apparently spoke to the Sunday Times and mentioned that their eBook will have full color, dual touchscreen, speakers, a mic and a webcam. Yeah, you read right, all of those things.

All this can be had for a price point of lower than $200. Hopefully it is true, because it can sink the Kindle and change the landscape of eReaders. I wouldn’t mind having this as the alternative to my Kindle. More »

ASUS has finally dropped it, their Eee Reader and they’re bringing a lot to the table. How does a dual screen eReader with the cheapest price available sound to you? That’s what ASUS is planning to have when they release their upcoming Eee Reader. More »

When I first bought the Kindle 2, I was stuck in that dilemma; do I want to pay upwards of $300 to buy an eReader? It took me a few days before I finally plunged and bought the Kindle 2. Since making my purchase, Amazon has dropped the price to $300, to make it more appealing to consumers and compete with other eReaders with a similar price range. But even with a lower price tag, the Kindle and other eReaders are still very expensive.

A new study by Forrester Research says consumers are still not buying into the whole eReader craze because of the price. According to the research, consumers feel that in order for eReaders to become a hit, they need to cost around $50. The problem is eReaders cost more than $50 per unit to make. Forrester says in order for the price of such devices to go below the $100 threshold, manufacturers might need to add a subscription model ala cell phone plans. Newspapers and magazines are the first choice since print advertising is declining and eReaders would be the next best thing, especially if they become a hit with consumers. More »

Google is continuing their attack in the ebook market, this time partnering with COOLERBOOKS, the online ebook store from British company, Interead, to provide . If the name Cooler sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve heard the name COOL-ER eReaders.

They were one of the hot items this year, the ones that were designed to look like iPods and retailed for $250 in the states. Interead is the company behind COOL-ER eReaders and now has Google providing over 1 million ebooks to the British company.

This will mark the first time Google has served ebooks to a company outside of the U.S. Google had previously partnered with Sony to provide over one million ebooks in their online ebook store. With Google broadening their horizons on the ebook platform, Amazon has to be worried a little bit, right?. More »

Sony released their latest answer to Amazon’s Kindle last week, The Daily Edition, offering wireless 3G service, wireless syncing and a 7-inch touch screen - which the Kindle lacks. But it still might not be enough to trump Amazon’s highly popular Kindle device. And here’s why.

Let’s use Apple’s iPod as an example. The iPod has now become synonymous with music and Mp3 players around the world. No matter who you ask, almost everyone knows what an iPod is over a Zune or any other Mp3 player from well known brands. Apple took the features already in place, put it in a nice package and called it something that rolls off the tongue easier than, let’s a Samsung CXS-101 (made up name). It’s so easy and well known now, my parents, both of who don’t know anything about gadgets, don’t own a computer or music player, know what an iPod is. They constantly tell my siblings to stop listening to their iPods at home. Imagine my mom having to tell my brother, “stop listening to that Samsung CXS.” Doesn’t sound like it rolls of your tongue now does it? I don’t think so. In terms of name recognition, you don’t get any better than the iPod. More »
