Starting mid-January 2010, 11,000 McDonald’s restaurants across the nation will partner up with AT&T to provide loiterers free WiFi. Apparently, this is their solution to getting McDonald’s loiterers to purchase food while loitering. Bored teenagers will now have the option to scarf down fries in between Facebook status updates. Smartphones and gadgets are made to make our lives easier, connect with the world during our every move. But one guy took it to another level. Dana Hanna, pulled out his phone during his wedding ceremony and changed his Facebook status to “married”. Of course his wife followed suit and did the same. The best about about the whole thing? The preacher, who had this to say: “If it’s official on Facebook, it’s official in my book.” Niceeeeee.

Not sure if that’s the best way to go about it, who’s reading your status anyway? I mean you’re friend should be at the ceremony right? Either way, it’s another weird Facebook story and I’m sure we’ll have many more to come. Check out the video below:

I’ve always been a proponent of the latest technology and am usually one of the first to buy a gadget when it’s first released. It’s just how I am and believe that some gadgets make things easier for us. In the past few years, smartphones have been that gadget. While many are still getting used to using a smartphone (my parents and cousins still don’t know how to use one), they’re extremely useful once you get the hang of it.

Take for example the new influx of apps across every smartphone operating system. Apps are designed to make the user experience easier and lately it seems like it’s made it so easy, using the version on my computer’s browser has become confusing.

The one app I’m going to use as an example is the new Facebook app for the iPhone, Android and other platforms (it sucks on WebOS but that’s another story). The app is extremely simple to use and gets you the info you want right away, without multiple clicks. It’s become so easy to use, I’ve preferred the Facebook app on my iPhone over the website on my browser. Here’s why. More »

Facebook has hit an all-time high in terms of popularity and I’ve been using it now more than ever for work. But the more I’m on the site, the more I notice things that bother me about some of the users. Many of them don’t know there are some universal signs of etiquette they need to abide by, otherwise they’re just annoying their friends and followers. Here’s a few things I’ve noticed that many of these people need to stop doing.

Life Quotes

I was almost guilty of this a few days ago but did not post anything. I see tons of friends question their life or a put general quote about something and then have their stalkers or “people who will comment on anything” write a comment about how awesome they are or how much that quote means to them. Once in a while is okay, but when you’re trying to be philosophical on every status message, it’s just annoying. More »

“What’s Gmail?”

That was the question that someone at the gym asked me last week. Being around so much technology and gadgets, I found the question extremely odd. Who didn’t know about Gmail? I explained what Gmail was to the person, a lady in her 30’s. Afterward, it got me thinking, if something as popular as Gmail is not known to people who are still relatively young, then what other advancement in tech don’t people know about. And we’re not talking about really old people, we’re talking about educated, folks in their twenties and 30’s. So, to make this a little more interesting, I went around and asked a few people at a bar I went with a few friends this past week. I asked 20 people about Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, Digg, iPhone and Android. Here are the results. More »

Do you think social networking sites like Facebook, will one day replace traditional email?

A. Yes, it’ll naturally progress into that

B. Possible, but social networking sites eventually die, so maybe no.

C. Heck no, email is so much better than Facebook/Social Networking sites

D. Something else will come along and replace both

Peek is a fairly new company, and with any new company comes trial and error, eventually leading to success. The Peek, an email and messaging only device was created by Amol Sarva when he realized that his pregnant wife wanted a simple device, without all of the bells and whistles attached. When Peek was first released, it became a big hit, users didn’t have to worry about monthly bills and minutes, it was everything for a lump one time fee. More »

Peace in the Middle East may be coming true with the help of Facebook’s newest peace page. Peace on Facebook is the latest creation from Facebook, opening up this page to all users looking to spread the word about World Peace. This page seems to be affiliated to Stanford’s Peace Dot somehow and contains a few graphs and a widget that allows visitors to share something about the site. More »

Last year while playing for a basketball league with a bunch of my friends, I updated game stats, schedules, among other things with my teammates through Facebook instead of traditional email, not because I didn’t want to but because it was easier and I didn’t have their email addresses. Every one of them had a Facebook account they checked more often than their emails. It wasn’t anything new, I was already following a trend that others had been doing for months on end. Plus, it was easier since most of them checked their Facebook messages more often than their emails. It’s a growing trend among users of social networking sites and it’s a trend that is likely to kill email, says a new Wall Street Journal report. More »

Here’s some surprising news: more women are flocking to social networking sites than men. The only site that attracts more male than female seems to be Digg.

According to Mark Brooks, an analyst in social networking and online dating, the main factor seems to be safety. Brooks says that social networking sites allow females, those looking to expand their social network, the chance to get to know people around them before ever getting the chance to date or interact with them on a more personal level. Facebook and Twitter have hit all time highs in terms of usage and popularity with Twitter recently hitting the $1 billion value. Both companies have been propelled by the advent of smartphone apps and widgets across other sites. What’s annoyed me most about many of these widgets is the devices they can now be found in, photo frames and televisions.

I don’t know about most users but I don’t want Facebook or Twitter on my TV, that’s what my computer and smartphone is for. For these manufacturing companies, it makes sense to include widgets of the most popular social networks in their devices, they become more attractive to buy but if you’re the consumer, do you really need your photo frame to display all your tweets or do you need to play with your FB account while watching TV? A new Nielson survey reveals that people are on Facebook three times more than Google. People spend an average of 1:53:21 on Google compared to the 5:46:04 on Facebook. For comparison’s sake, YouTube’s average time is 1:17:20. These number place Facebook, the 4th largest website in the world, at the top spot in terms of time spent on their site per visitor. The average time actually increased from July to August from 4 hours and 39 minutes to 5 hours and 46 minutes. So what does this all mean, are we wasting our time doing absolutely nothing? By the look of these numbers, I’d say yes we are. More »

Many social networking site users are done with sharing their plans on their profiles as it’s becoming a little dangerous, whether it be home robberies, or layoffs at work. Many users mindlessly set status messages and upload pictures they think no one will see. Well, what most users don’t know is that 30% of employers use Facebook to scrutinize which employees are suitable for the job.

You don’t want to get rid of your Facebook? No worries. You just have to take the proper precautions to make sure you’re in the safe zone. Most people don’t take the time to do this, thus putting themselves in a dangerous position. Well, here are five easy steps to stay safe and private on Facebook. More »

This past week Facebook released a new feature, very similar to Twitter’s tagging service, where you can attach @ with a user’s name and they’ll be notified of the tag. This obviously begs the question, is Facebook trying to be more like Twitter? Many will argue and say yes they are but it won’t happen. More »
