Foxconn’s plant in Shandong, eastern China, was reportedly on fire, which has now been extinguished with no casualties. The fire was in electrical cables on a building roof and the ’damage would be covered by insurance.’ It was apparently started from abandoned pipe lines on top of the building. More »


It’s almost ridiculous to believe since Apple still hasn’t said or made an official announcement about the iPhone 5, but it seems as though one of their main suppliers, Foxconn, is trying to keep ahead of the predicted rush. Foxconn is the electronics manufacturer that makes products for Apple (iPads and iPhones), Acer, Intel, HP, Dell, Nintendo, Nokia, Microsoft and Sony. The company plans to bring in over a million robots to replace the employees doing menial tasks like spraying, welding, and assembling. Chinese newswire Xinhua reported that this was announced by Foxconn’s chairman, founder, and CEO Terry Gou at the workers’ dance party. Foxconn already has 10,000 robots and that the number will increase to 300,000 next year and one million in three years. But according to the Financial Times, Gou meant to communicate that the robots would relieve workers of routine tasks who complained of being treated like robots. More »


The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the upcoming iPhone 5 will be arriving in the third quarter of this year, possibly in September as previously rumored. But more interestingly, there are new claims from sources that say that the iPhone will be shedding some weight and arrive “thinner and lighter” with its next launch. More »

DigiTimes is reporting that Apple has already placed large orders for 10″ glass touchscreens from Foxconn’s subsidiary Innolux. A second report from Financial Times suggests that Apple has booked the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco) for a Tuesday January 26th event, which could be for the announcement of the highly anticipated Apple Tablet.
