Many observers like to philosophize deeply about issues that generally can be answered with the simplest explanation. I rarely agree with Steve Ballmer, but his succinct (and I would have thought, salient) explanation for Google’s whirlwind rise to power is because of its efficient search engine: “The number one thing that Google benefits from in search is that they did it right, first.” More »

Google Voice is a newly released product by the search-engine giant that allows you to do all sorts of things that you couldn’t do with a traditional phone. The problem is, though, that many are intimidated by these features and are unsure about how to use them. Well, fear no more, because Google has developed some helpful tutorial videos that will walk you through some of the key features. More »

Even though Google and Apple has had a rocky relationship over the past few years, Google’s mobile engineering executive Vic Gundotra insists that “Apple is a very close and valuable partner.” Recently, there was gossip that Steve Jobs flatly proclaimed privately that he “hates” Google CEO Eric Schmidt, whose company supposedly refrained from allowing multi-touch on its Nexus One so as not to anger Apple. Last week, an OTA update enabled Google’s smartphone to perform multi-touch in Google Maps, Browser, and Gallery. More »
The Google Voice fiasco with the FCC, Google and Apple has taken another turn. According to a new full text released by the FCC, Phil Schiller, the man overseeing the app selection process, personally rejected the Google Voice app for duplication of functionality. This is big news because Apple told the FCC a different story. More »
Today, AT&T responded to the FCC inquiry into the rejection of the Google Voice app in Apple’s App store. AT&T claimed they had nothing to do with the Google Voice app getting rejected. Guess how Apple responded? They also denied rejecting the Google Voice App, but added they’re still looking into the application because it replaces the iPhone’s core mobile functionality and doesn’t want the Google Voice app to replace the iPhone’s interface.
AT&T didn’t come out and say Apple rejected the Google Voice app or any other app for that matter, but hinted it was Apple’s fault. Apple in this case didn’t throw AT&T under the bus, but instead is making an excuse for “rejecting” the Google Voice application by saying they’re still reviewing it aka we’re telling you we’re reviewing it so you can leave us the heck alone. If you have Google Voice, here’s another reason to rejoice, it’s free to call Canada using the the service. It was free back when it was GrandCentral and it’s free once again. Now you can bother the folks across the border and let them know you’re using the Google Voice service they don’t have. Or you can always taunt them about being across the border. Whatever the reason, it’s good to know you can call up folks in Canada.

After reading Michael Arrington’s post on TechCrunch about porting his number to Google Voice and how much happier he is after abandoning the iPhone and AT&T, a few things didn’t make sense to me about his post.
First of all, Mike claims that he has no carrier stranglehold him because he can now move to any service whenever he likes. I don’t see how this makes a difference, if you stay with AT&T or go to T-Mobile. You’d still need to sign up for a service in order to use Google Voice (a service that I absolutely love). So, the claim that no carrier will stranglehold doesn’t make any sense, even if he signs up for a shorter length of time or gets prepaid phone service. More »
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the FCC has decided to take a closer look at Apple’s recent dismissal of the Google Voice app from its App Store, as part of its bigger investigation into mobile cell phone carriers. They’re interested in who’s behind this recent Google Voice fiasco. Is it AT&T doing things behind the scene or is Apple’s fault? More »
If you haven’t heard, Apple rejected the Official Google Voice app for the iTunes App Store. Many in the internet world are upset at Apple and AT&T for it. Twitter users were able to voice their frustration using the social network. More »
Last week after writing the Google Voice post, I wondered if there were any good apps to utilize the Google Voice for my iPhone. My question was answered by the folks over Riverturn, who sent me a copy of their updated VoiceCentral app. The application looks much more refined than their previous version and almost mirrors the iPhone’s Phone settings. (Screen shots and more details after the break). More »
Last night when I least expected it, I received my Google Voice invite. I was excited and started to set it up. In the process I forgot to take some screen shots (Dohhh!). I realized by the 3rd Step, so that’s where it all starts. I just have to say, playing with it has been great. I hope you enjoy the screen shots and short review (longer one coming soon). More »
Google is planning to release a Google Voice app for both the Android and Blackberry today . The news was released by Google’s Vincent Paquet who said that the application will not only allow Google voice users to place calls on their devices and have recipients calls display the Google Voice number but it will also make it possible to view voicemail transcripts within the application instead of using the mobile web. Google Voice has not reached everyone yet, I’m still waiting for mine, but according to BoyGeniusReports, some new features had already started popping up. One of these new features is the ability to change phone numbers. More »
