I have admired Ulysse Nardin timepieces for many years, although I have never owned one (since I personally prefer OMEGA, IWC, Rolex, and Blancpain first), but the Chairman Android smartphone gives me shivers. My philosophy is that I would much rather have a $600 smartphone like the HTC EVO 4G and a $48,900 wristwatch instead of a hybrid like the Chairman, which is shipping this month. Since the Chairman is limited to 1846 copies and is targeted at chairmen, the opinions of commoners like myself do not matter. More »

Last week, the interwebz was replete with rumors that Google was or was planning on sharing Android operating system ad revenue with carriers and smartphone manufacturers. However, Google has contradicted these reports. More »

Beating the chiefs from Ford, JPMorgan, Netflix, and Oracle (among others), Steve Jobs has been crowned by Barrons as the “Most Respected CEO” in America. During the recession, Apple has soared thanks to Jobs’ ideas and drive. Barrons credits him for Apple’s reinvention beginning in the late 1990s when the company was in financial trouble. More »

Here is another entry in the long list of Android/ChromeOS netbooks that will bombard the market starting this summer. Google’s open source operating systems are enabling start-up companies like Mobinova to produce netbooks/tablets/phones since they do not have to spend much on software research and development or licensing. Very publicly, Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt were amateurishly photographed having java at Calafia, whose proprietor is an ex-Google chef. All of the reported animosity between the Apple chief and the Google CEO are apparently overblown… More »

Google’s leaving China has sent shock-waves through the tech industry. In an era when multi-national corporations are willing to abandon ethics for profits, working within the communistic Chinese regime, Google has declared, “No.” Sure, Google’s motivations for not backing down to the government are not entirely moral (Google was being trounced by Baidu in the search business), but this political exit has caught the eyes of Dell and GoDaddy. Google’s Chinese research and advertising staff will remain in operation, but all searches from Google.cn have been forwarded to Google.com.hk, the Hong Kong site that Chinese officials cannot censor. More »

Another Monday and another lawsuit, this time it is an all encompassing one, as MicroUnity sues 22 companies for mobile microprocessor copyright infringement. Apple will have to band with Google and HTC to fight this. More »

Coloware is a premier online place for getting custom paint jobs on laptops, Macs, phones, and gaming machines. For those who agree with me about the Nexus One’s tame and uninspired color scheme, spend an extra $175 for this metallic “Midnight Blue” and “Abyss Blue” two-tone design or any color combination of your imagining. A new and unlocked custom Nexus One is also available for $800. More »

I feel for Jon Rubinstein. His company was the pioneer of the smartphone forerunner, the PDA (although Apple’s Newton started it all). In the late 1990s, Palm was an enviable company, but its failure to transition (successfully) its products to the smartphone market has doomed the once glorious creator of numerous beloved PDAs. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 presentation today unveiled nothing that has not been widely rumored for months: there will be no multitasking; Microsoft’s Marketplace store is the only way to obtain WM7 apps; HTC HD2 will not be upgraded to WM7. In a nutshell, Microsoft is following the strictly isolationist iPhone instead of open source Android (surprise!). In more cheerful news, Samsung, Asus, and LG all demoed WM7 devices. More »

A survey by Crowd Science indicates that an alarming number of Blackberry owners “definitely or probably would” switch over to iPhone or Android when they make their next purchases. More »

Heads up, Diggers, because Digg.com is going to be revamped significantly in a few weeks. Among the changes are one-click submissions, personalized homepages, weakened power Diggers, and more evenly distributed traffic to top posts. More »

…because, as Steve Jobs has discovered, they will become your bitterest enemies. In case you did not know, Eric Schmidt was on Apple’s board of directors until August 2009, even though he has been Google CEO since 2001. There was clearly a conflict of interests, as proven by Google’s release of Android OS, which is a direct competitor to the iPhone. More »

Charlie Kindel (not Amazon Kindle) of Microsoft played with his Windows Phone 7 prototype yesterday, and while the user interface looks fancy, there is not anything terribly new or exciting. More »
