Nintendo will be replacing the amazingly popular DS with a new system temporarily called the 3DS, which will allow gamers to enjoy “3D effects without the need for any special glasses.” The 3DS is scheduled for release on or before March 2011 and will be demoed at E3 in June. More »
Lights, Camera Action! Flip MinoHD is making a reappearance with their all new improved version. Due to Apple’s competition with the iPod Nano, Flip decided to release a new updated MinoHD pocket recorder. Flip updated the mini camera to 8GB instead of the old 4GB memory and made the screen bigger.
The bigger, 2 inch screen (previously 1.5 inches) screen allows the user to record and play in 720p HD showing off the new design of the device. The front of the device has brushed aluminum and rounded off edges, almost like an iPod. On the flip site, a special case is available for the MinoHD, customizable by the user although this doesn’t help out the price situation much. The Flip costs $230 which is too much for many users, especially for a simple recording device. An iPod Nano seems like a better deal for the money although the quality is not too great.

ROP (Retinopathy of prematurity) is one of the main causes of vision loss in children and no technological advancement has helped, until now. Engineers at Duke University have introduced a handheld device to find and monitor ROP diagnosis and treatment, which is a cause for blindness in premature babies.
With this device, the scientists have managed to create a 3-D image of the back of the eye which could help find serious medical conditions in an infant’s eyes. The device creates a high resolution 3-D map of the eyeball layers, similar to looking into the side of a fish tank and seeing everything in detail. This new device can take pictures up to 40x faster than an average opthalmoscope which is rather slow at identifying eye conditions. This can help identify eye conditions faster and could end up saving many lives. The device is currently being tested by Duke Eye Center ophthalmologist, Cynthia Toth to decide what it can do when it comes to treatment decisions regarding eye conditions. Amazing stuff!

With a name that’s all too indicative of the economic crisis, Chinavasion’s handheld emulator is officially called the “Multi-platform handheld gaming entertainment station“, but as the description states, is often “lovingly called the Delightfully Small (DS)”.
