This is official breaking news: Microsoft has declared that no Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone, not even the HTC HD2, will be upgraded to Windows Phone 7. Aside from having two buttons too many (Microsoft stipulates only three buttons), the powerful HD2 lacks “some hardware components,” according to Tony Wilkinson, who is the Business Operations Director for Microsoft Australia. Most of the attention at Mobile World Congress centers around Android and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Phone 7 announcement, but HTC is one of the few companies that is still Windows Mobile 6.5 loyalists. The HD Mini, which is a more affordable version of the HTC HD2, runs Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Presumably, the HD Mini will not be upgradable to Windows Phone 7. More »
