Legendary Shigeru Miyamoto says that he is devoting lots of energy into educational efforts for the Nintendo DS. Some Japanese students already use the handheld gaming system for learning (pictured above) in the classroom. When the new school year begins, Nintendo will introduce elementary and junior high schools to the DS as an educational tool, although exactly how this process will be implemented has not been documented to the public. Nintendo has declared that its new DSi XL, which will debut on March 28th for $190, is also an e-reader. Apple’s iPad and iPod Touch/iPhone are breaking into the Japanese gaming corporation’s territory; the DSi XL is return fire that will a title called “100 Classic Books,” which includes works from Shakespeare and Twain. From Htcyou: Not a phone but a portable media player (PMP), Philips’ GoGear Connect looks similar to the GoGear Muse MP3/multimedia player and runs Android 2.1. Philips plans for the device to launch in July. If the Muse is any indication of pricing, the Connect should be relatively affordable compared to the iPod. With Android 2.1 as the OS, the iPod Touch might finally have a serious challenger outside of the Zune HD and Cowon S9. More »

The iPod Touch and iPhone currently use the iPhone OS, as well as the upcoming iPad. Apple’s new job listing reveals that an engineering manager will be responsible for developing the “iPhone OS on new platforms” and would need to be expert in “ARM based SoC” designs (which describes the iPad’s A4 chip).
