Under a month before Apple’s iPad launch, major publisher Penguin Books has demonstrated some of the interactive ebooks that are lined up for the iBook Store. The video shows that embedded audio and video will be significant features of the newer ebook mediums going forward. More »

In a recent study by the University of Georgia, it seems that many people are a little less than completely satisfied with Amazon’s Kindle e-reader. While the majority of users reported that reading on the device was certainly very easy in terms of functionality as well as easy on the eyes, there were some key complaints that users hope future manufacturers will take into consideration. Apple’s iPad will probably be at least somewhat successful, but I have my reservations about its appeal. Personally, I have no need for this e-reader/netbook hybrid, and its shortcomings are quite apparent. Even though I think that it will be a solid seller, to play devil’s advocate, I will propose five major reasons why the iPad should be a failure. More »

Wall Street analysts predict that the iPad will move 4 million units by this year and double that number in 2011. I have five big explanations for why it will be Waterworld and not Avatar, but that list is for tomorrow. Today, I want to examine why the iPad is destined for big things. More »

Is the Apple iPad just an advanced iPod iTouch or Amazon Kindle on steroids? So far, reactions are very mixed in the media and within Apple’s fan-base, but most people who do not own an Apple product are scoffing –and I cannot fault them for their derision. One day after the main show, I feel that entire January 27th event was underwhelming. My favorite part of the proceedings was the introduction, when we got to hear the tail-end of CCR’s spectacular “Rude Awakening.” More »

After much hype in the past couple weeks over Apple’s “latest creation,” Apple has finally unveiled it’s latest product: the iPad. The unveiling today has confirmed the suspicions of many that Apple would be releasing their own “Tablet PC.” More »

Aside from 3D television, the third generation “e-readers” are also a huge topic of interest. Like their television counterparts, the competition for the best e-reader out there is tough. Aside from the preexisting Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader, other companies are pumping out their own versions of readers, hoping to flatten the competition. More »

I commend One Laptop Per Child for its vision, but there are quite a few design and concepts about its program and laptop that I would change. Here is my idea: an advanced e-reader/simplified notebook device at $299 shared by two children. More »

A sobering number for consumer electronics companies is 7.8, which is how many percentage points revenue dropped in 2009 from the previous year: from $179 billion to $165 billion. However, tech analysts are hopeful for some key products to emerge and bring sales back up. More »

While some of these gadgets certainly were not released in 2009, they still, without a doubt, ruled 2009. Here are my picks, in no particular order, for the top ten gadgets of 2009: More »
Can Apple be the savior for the publishing industry like they have been trying for the music industry? According to a report on CNET, Oppenheimer’s analyst Yair Reiner, says that Apple is pitching their new tablet device to publishers.
If these rumors are true then Apple can change the landscape for publishers, very similar to what they did with the App store and continuing to do with music. Currently publishers have a 50/50 split with Amazon for ebooks sold on the Kindle. Apple is planning to give publishers a 70% of that cut, making their proposal much more attractive. More »
Amazon continues to chug along this holiday season. Today they announced in a press release that November was the best month for them ever in terms of Kindle sales. They didn’t specify how many Kindles they’ve sold but it’s safe to say, they’ve sold a lot.
That’s a grand statement considering Amazon also sells Apple iPods, which are usually at the top of Christmas lists every year. This year it seems like eReaders are the way to go, as Barnes & Nobles announced earlier this month, that they’re Nook device was sold out till January.
Of course, part of Amazon’s increased sales were due to the decrease in price to $259 from $360 earlier this year and introducing a world edition in October. Since there are no hard numbers, we’ll just have to take Amazon’s word for it. They wouldn’t lie to us, right?
