Robots are usually cool for movies. Perhaps because androids remind us of ourselves in our capacity to create, or maybe we just love seeing metal blown to bits, but robots have been able to make us laugh, cry, and scream with excitement. Here are my favorite android/robot movies of all time. The criteria for this list are that the films must have been released in America, and the protagonists have to be robotic, or the plot must center around androids –therefore, Star Wars does not fit because R2D2 is not a main character, and robots are not the main theme of the series. For most of my life whenever it came to watching movies, er sorry…I mean “films,” (ever since film school I learned that “movie” is as derogatory a term as calling a little person a midget) I would place them in two categories: Films I absolutely had to see in theatres; and films I’d wait to watch at home. My decision process has always been simple; any films involving robots, dragons, aliens, superheroes, natural disasters, wars, zombies, wizards, James Bonds or any film who’s title begins with the word “Star” or “Bourne,” I’ll watch in theatres. Films depicting regular humans doing regular human stuff, ie dramas, suspense thrillers, comedies, dramadies, and any movies with the word “Wife” or “Notebook” in the title, and I’ll wait until the dvd comes out.

Sometimes an idea is just ahead of its time and sometimes…it’s just crap. According to Engadget, the folks over at Paramount Pictures and Kingston Technology are hoping that upcoming venture is the former and not the latter. The two are teaming up to offer full length movies on flash drives.
The initial fruit of this partnership is a 4GB Kingston DataTraveler drive featuring “Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen” which is currently available for $29.99. Now the movie doesn’t take up the entire drive, but it’s unclear as to how much space remains for actual storage. And while this techie mash-up makes since on paper, it hasn’t taken off in previous iterations. Sony gave it a shot with the PSP and SanDisk crashed and burned with the ill-fated Sansa Clip and its microSD-based Slot Music. More »
Google may finally have a plan to make some money from YouTube. YouTube Execs are planning to offer a $3.95 charge to rent a movie, which is the same price Apple charges for movies and very close to video-on-demand prices. If Google can get movie studios on board, they’d be competing in a very crowded field. Apple, Netflix, and Amazon all offer movie rental services but YouTube is the most popular video site, so it may become a decent competitor. It’s just a question of whether or not users are willing to switch from their current rental services to go with YouTube.
The deal is reported to be in the early stages, with a final agreement three to four months away. Google has been pressed for the past few years to make money but have yet to come up with a solid revenue stream. YouTube has a great chance to make a splash in the video rental market. YouTube had over 121 million viewers in July according to ComScore. More »
