I go to school in Philadelphia. I don’t have a car. Great. To get around, I am forced to use public transportation. At the risk of sounding like a creeper, I think I would categorize myself as an avid people watcher. I think it’s interesting to observe different people in public and their habits. More »

One would think that in this sluggish economy, premium computer makers like Apple would languish, yet Jobs’ company posted its record best year. Not only did Apple gain market share in the under $1,000 PC price range, consumers who bought a computer over $1,000 overwhelmingly chose a Mac. With the iPad, in 2010, Apple is attempting to cut into the sub-$500 sector too. More »

Apple’s iPad will probably be at least somewhat successful, but I have my reservations about its appeal. Personally, I have no need for this e-reader/netbook hybrid, and its shortcomings are quite apparent. Wall Street analysts predict that the iPad will move 4 million units by this year and double that number in 2011. I have five big explanations for why it will be Waterworld and not Avatar, but that list is for tomorrow. Today, I want to examine why the iPad is destined for big things. More »

Is the Apple iPad just an advanced iPod iTouch or Amazon Kindle on steroids? So far, reactions are very mixed in the media and within Apple’s fan-base, but most people who do not own an Apple product are scoffing –and I cannot fault them for their derision. One day after the main show, I feel that entire January 27th event was underwhelming. My favorite part of the proceedings was the introduction, when we got to hear the tail-end of CCR’s spectacular “Rude Awakening.” More »

While some of these gadgets certainly were not released in 2009, they still, without a doubt, ruled 2009. Here are my picks, in no particular order, for the top ten gadgets of 2009: More »

Two major announcements by graphics giant Nvidia signal a shift of focus.
First, Nvidia announced yesterday that it will be ceasing all development of new chipsets. It is mainly because of a licensing agreement with Intel. In previous Intel computers, the processor (CPU) was connected to a northbridge chip. The north bridge would communicated with the memory (RAM) and an integrated graphics processor. It was also connected to a southbridge via the front side bus (FSB) that communicated with all other parts like the graphics card, sound card, etc.
In new Core i5 and i7 based computers, the CPU took over the duty of the northbridge and the CPU communicates with the southbridge using a proprietary bus called the Digital Media Interface (DMI) bus. Previously, Nvidia had a license to make northbridge and southbridge chips that used the FSB. Now, Intel isn’t giving them a license for the new DMI. So, Nvidia can’t make chipsets for Core i5 and i7 computers. There is ongoing litigation regarding the DMI licensing problem, but it will most likely not end in Nvidia’s favor. More »
