Back in 2006, a video was uploaded to Google Video that depicted several school kids harassing and bullying an autistic classmate. Hours later, the Italian police notified Google of this video, and the search-engine giant immediately took it down. Google then worked with the Italian police to find out who uploaded the video, and that person and several other classmates involved were sentenced to ten months of community service. This weekend’s news of Tiger Woods getting into a car accident, Allen Iverson retiring (for the moment) and the shooting of four Police Officers in Washington State, were sent to me in the form of Twitter Tweets and text messages. While I did watch TV, it wasn’t breaking news or anything of that nature, to the TV stations showing holiday programming and football.

The news of Michael Jackson’s death shut down Google for over 25 minutes today. Google actually thought they were being cyber attacked.

“The spike in searches related to Michael Jackson was so big that Google News initially mistook it for an automated attack,” R.J. Pittman, director of Product Management for Google, wrote in a blog post. “As a result, for about 25 minutes yesterday, when some people searched Google News they saw a ‘We’re sorry’ page before finding the articles they were looking for.” More »
