Slowly but surely, solid-state-drives are making their entrance into mainstream acceptance. For sometime, higher-end laptops from Apple, Sony, HP, etc. have offered optional SSD hard disks as replacements for mechanical drives, which, due to moving parts, are significantly slower than solid-state storage for random and sequential reading (as well as random writing) speed. More consumers are taking notice of SSD because their benefits are readily apparent: much faster operating system and application boot up times and quicker general response from computers. Unfortunately, the biggest hurdle of SSD (in addition to first generation drives that had terrible Jmicron controllers) has remained its small capacity and high price. While drives are becoming more affordable and bigger, 60-64Gb disks are still in the $150+ range. People like myself have waited for the ideal solution, and with Corsair’s budget Nova series, I think that I have found it. More »

Alienware’s M11x is the most powerful ultra-portable gaming laptop there is. It is almost shocking what Alienware has packed into the 11-inch screen notebook: an Intel Core i7-640UM processor and a 1Gb GeForce GT 335M with NVIDIA Optimus technology. Add on some optional upgrades, and the $949 starting price balloons to $2,572.99. More »

Intel (silly, leave graphics to the big boys) is abandoning its “Larrabee” GPU and will channel its efforts into furthering the mediocre integrated graphics on its chipsets, but NVIDIA wants to put Fermi in a laptop by June. OEM laptop manufacturer Clevo is the first to receive the GeForce GTX 480M, which comes with up to 2Gb of GDDR5 256-bit memory. More »

It is pretty common knowledge that brand name computers all use parts (motherboards by Asus, hard drives by Toshiba, RAM by HNIX, etc.) not made by the company whose name is inscribed on the casing, but few people realize that all major laptops originate out of several major factories. Taiwanese companies Quanta and Compal make up more than half of all notebooks sold worldwide. Quanta Computer Inc. is the second largest manufacturer and has a client list that includes Apple, Acer, HP, Lenovo, Dell, and more. Compal Electronics Corp. surged ahead of its rival this year, reporting sales records, and also supplies wares to many of Quanta’s patrons. More »

According to core77’s case study of laptop/netbook use positions, a majority of them spell out pain in your future with a capital ‘P.’ The image pictured with red spots illustrates all the positions where pain is likely to form as a result of RSI, or repetitive strain injury. In short, RSI is basically pain that comes from you being in the same position for long periods of time. More »
As many of you are probably aware, HP released its new line of Envy notebooks this month. I have to admit, the specs are really enticing: Core i7 processor, ATI Mobility Radeon 4830 graphics, long-lasting battery and Beats by Dr. Dre audio. Why don’t I like it then?
You see, when I think of a MacBook, I think of elegant design. When I think of a ThinkPad, I think of a sturdy, business oriented machine that will fit well into a work environment. When I think of an Alienware, I think of a flashy, mean looking gaming machine. Each strong brand has a distinct brand identity. When I see a Lamborghini from the distance, I don’t mistake it for a Volvo. More »
