I feel for Jon Rubinstein. His company was the pioneer of the smartphone forerunner, the PDA (although Apple’s Newton started it all). In the late 1990s, Palm was an enviable company, but its failure to transition (successfully) its products to the smartphone market has doomed the once glorious creator of numerous beloved PDAs. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 presentation today unveiled nothing that has not been widely rumored for months: there will be no multitasking; Microsoft’s Marketplace store is the only way to obtain WM7 apps; HTC HD2 will not be upgraded to WM7. In a nutshell, Microsoft is following the strictly isolationist iPhone instead of open source Android (surprise!). In more cheerful news, Samsung, Asus, and LG all demoed WM7 devices. More »

In North America, Symbian might be as marginal as soccer, but Nokia’s smartphone OS is still the world leader, holding major shares in Europe, Asia, and South America. This week, after Microsoft had shown its hand with Windows Phone 7, Nokia demoed the upcoming Symbian 4. More »

The war between Apple and Palm seems to be over. In the latest software update for the Palm Pre (webOS 1.3.1), the iTunes syncing feature is missing. Palm and Apple have been going at each other for a while now over whether or not Palm is allowed to sync its “iPhone killer”, Pre with iTunes. What Palm did was design the Pre’s software so that iTunes recognizes it as a valid device such as an iPhone or iPod, allowing music and media integration. More »

Looks like Palm is defying USB-IF and Apple with the release of the 1.2.1 update, which allows iTunes Syncing on the Pre again. This has been a long ongoing battle between Palm and Apple, one that was settled by the USB-IF, saying that if Palm were to continue syncing with iTunes, they’d be in direct violation of the USB-IF membership agreement. Looks like Palm doesn’t really care, so it’s on! More »
Apple seems to be in the news alot today. Here’s another, but this time it’s about their small war against the Palm Pre.
When the Palm Pre first launched, the developers, some of them which were previous Apple employees, put in a code that made iTunes think it was syncing with an iPod and allowed iPod syncing capabilities. Apple quickly caught on and released an update that removed the feature. Palm responded with an update that allowed the syncing once again. It went back and forth like this for some time before Palm decided to take the matter to USB Implementary Forum, saying Apple is violating the principle of open connectivity. The USB-IF responded today, in favor of Apple, making Palm feel like an idiot for bringing it to the Forum in the beginning. More »
Smart phones become more and more advanced each day and with it come security problems. For example, the handset could get lost but it can be easily replaced .The big problem would be the data on it. Palm Pre has decided to sneak up on everyone and release the Pixi. On a day that’s pretty much reserved for all Apple news (today is the iPod Event, if you didn’t know), Palm is trying to make a bold statement with a very small device.
The Pixi is a smaller version of the Palm Pre, but without the sliding keyboard and WiFi. It comes with 8GB storage capacity, 2 megapixel camera and will cost $149 on a 2-year contract from Sprint after rebates. More »

Although I’ve been a loyal Palm user for two years (Treo 680), it took me less than a month to get sick of its interface and OS. So, why even bother? For one, at the time it had the largest library of smartphone apps, and secondly, it was easy to install app launchers (which made the interface bearable) and it provided a lot of leeway for customization.
