The Playstation 3 Slim is officially a hit. The numbers have come in and Sony’s latest release has sold over 1 million units worldwide since it’s September 1st release. This has thrown Sony right back in the console wars, which many were declaring over after Nintendo started selling their Wiis like hot cakes and the Xbox 360 was just chugging along.
The sales figures of the PS3 Slim also show that people didn’t hate the PS3 but wanted a cheaper offering from Sony. If this was the original price of the device, even for the fat one, they would have sold millions more, but selling them for over $500 was too much for consumers to pay. I would know, I waited about a year before finally splurging on the fat version. More »
Sony should have introduced the Playstation 3 Slim a year ago and they would have been gold. According to the latest numbers, the Playstation 3 Slim has already sold over 150,000 in three days. That’s a sales jump of over 1,000 percent. Some still argue that it’s all about the price and it has nothing to do with the Slim. Whether or not it’s true, Sony has finally got some positive news about their Playstation 3 gaming console. More »
Sony’s been getting a lot of press the past week because of the PS3 Slim and the price cut on the current Playstation 3, but Sony’s head of Computer Entertainment, Kazuo Hirai, revealed in an interview that the PS3 Motion Controller is coming in Spring 2010.
Hirai let the motion controller news slip during the interview when he discussed Sony’s 10-year success plan, which the PS3 Slim was intended to help bring back some buzz. Of course there’s reasons behind why Sony hasn’t yet released the Motion Controller, software and games. There aren’t any games that’ll work with the controller and a new software would be needed to make it compatible with the games. Releasing the controller without games or tested hardware would push Sony back, which something they can’t afford to do. More »
Sony finally released their widely rumored and very sexy Playstation 3 Slim at Gamescon on Tuesday, with coverage from every angle on the device. I’ll definitely consider buying it once I get my hands on the device but while reading and writing about the PS3 Slim, I couldn’t help think about the many gadgets that could easily be made slimmer. It’s just a natural thought process when it comes to gadgets. Slimmer devices are easier to carry, and more convenient especially when we’re on the go.
The first device I’d want to be slimmer is my iPhone. I think the iPhone is capable of becoming slimmer, maybe not as slim as the current iPod Touch but very close. And who wouldn’t love a slimmer, skinnier TV or computer monitor? And what about the Kindle 2? I love my Kindle but wish it got rid of the keyboard and added touchscreen, making it smaller, lighter and maybe even slimmer. Sony’s decision to go slim with the PS 3 is great for any gamer.
If you could slim down any gadget you owned, which one would it be?
Yesterday’s announcement of the Playstation 3 Slim brings up a few questions; why did it take Sony so long to release the Slim, why so long before the price cut and will I buy it?
The obvious answer for the first question is: price. The actual cost to build the original PS 3 was upwards of $800. When it was first released, it cost to the consumer was $599 for the 60GB version. $499 for the 20GB version. It was the most expensive gaming console out in the market but Sony was still losing money on it, hoping to make it back by selling more games for it. It didn’t happen. The price scared many, who jumped to the cheaper Xbox 360 and then the highly successful Nintendo Wii.
As for the slim, no one knows why Sony took so long to release it. One theory might be, they were hoping after a price reduction and a slew of updates on the original Playstation 3 (went through various minor hardware updates including hard drive capacities), people would eventually buy the system. That didn’t happen either. More »
Here’s some new pictures of what could possibly be the new Playstation 3 Slim from a Chinese gaming magazine, Gamewave and Best Buy Ads. These are unconfirmed and could be fake but it’s worth a look. It’s being rumored to be released next week, August 19th at GamesCom. Keep in mind, these are not official Sony PS3 Slim pictures. More »
The Playstation 3 Slim might be coming soon. Yesterday on the Amazon Germany site, a listing for a “Playstation 3 Konsole slim” popped up with an Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN) but the listing didn’t provide a picture or details. More »
The Playstation 2 Slim might already be out there somewhere. CrunchGear had a very grainy video taken in the Philippines that showed what looks like a PS 3 Slim. (Video after the break) More »
